LoRaWAN Gateways

Information and common questions about our LoRaWAN gateways

Updated over 2 months ago

Quick Answer

Our LoRaWAN gateways let Bluebot ProLink meters send data to the cloud without using Wi-Fi at the meter. They use LoRaWAN technology- a long range, wireless technology designed for reliable connections over large distances with very low power use.

What is LoRaWAN?

LoRaWAN stands for Long Range Wide Area Network.

In simple terms:

  • It’s a wireless technology made for our ProLink devices that need to send small amounts of data

  • It works over much longer distances than Wi-Fi

  • It’s very reliable and energy-efficient

This makes it ideal for water meters, buildings, farms, and remote installations.

How Bluebot Uses LoRaWAN

With LoRaWAN:

  • Each ProLink Bluebot meter sends data wirelessly to a nearby gateway

  • The gateway sends that data to the internet and the Bluebot cloud

  • ProLink Meters can be hundreds or thousands of feet away from the gateway

Because of this:

  • You don’t need Wi-Fi or repeaters at each meter

  • You don’t need to manage Wi-Fi passwords at every install point

What Do the Gateways Do?

The gateways act as the bridge between your Bluebot ProLink meters and the internet.

They:

  • Collect data from all nearby Bluebot meters

  • Send that data securely to the Bluebot cloud

  • Allow you to view usage in the mobile app, web dashboard, or via API

How the Gateways Connect to the Internet

LoRaWAN gateways can connect using:

  • Ethernet (direct to your router)

  • Wi-Fi

  • 4G LTE (model-dependent)

This flexibility makes them ideal for:

  • Large properties

  • Commercial buildings

  • Farms and irrigation systems

  • Locations without reliable Wi-Fi

When Should I Use a LoRaWAN gateway?

Choose a LoRaWAN gateway if:

  • You have a Bluebot ProLink model

  • Your ProLink meters are far from your router

  • You’re installing multiple ProLink meters at one site

  • The install location has weak or no Wi-Fi

  • You want a simpler, more reliable setup
